Using NDIS Funding for Mental Health Support

Through the power of lived experience and peer support, NDIS participants can access real-world understanding and guidance that sparks growth, fosters connection, and transforms lives.

Our Peer Program

You can access our Peer Program that combines the expertise of a Peer Mentor and a Peer Support Worker. This means that both roles work together to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive level of support that meets all your NDIS needs.
  • Peer Mentors focus on helping you build skills and achieve your goals. They provide guidance in setting objectives, developing strategies, and empowering you to take steps forward in your mental health and wellbeing journey.
  • Peer Support Workers assist with everyday tasks like shopping, cooking, maintaining your home, or attending appointments, all while keeping mental health and wellbeing as a central part of the conversation.
By working together, Peer Mentors and Peer Support Workers ensure you have the support you need to manage both your daily life and your longer-term goals. Through collaboration, they can share insights, align strategies, and provide you with seamless, holistic support tailored to your unique journey.

This combined approach allows you to benefit from the strengths of both roles, creating a more effective and supportive experience as you work toward living the life you want. Let us know how we can work with you to make this collaboration work best for your needs!

Further Info

Navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be complex, especially when it comes to using your funding for mental health support. Among the valuable options available are recovery coaching, peer mentoring, and peer support work. Each of these services offers unique benefits and can play a crucial role in your mental health journey. Here’s how you can effectively use your NDIS funding to incorporate these forms of support into your plan.

What is NDIS Funding for Mental Health Support?

The NDIS provides funding to individuals with permanent and significant disabilities, including mental health conditions. This funding supports various aspects of life, including mental health care. With NDIS funding, you can access:
  • Therapeutic Services: Such as counselling and therapy.
  • Daily Living Assistance: Help with everyday tasks that may be challenging due to your mental health condition.
  • Skill Development: Programs aimed at improving your ability to manage your condition and enhance your quality of life.

What is Recovery Coaching, Peer Mentoring, and Peer Support Work?

Recovery Coaching: Recovery coaching involves working with a coach who provides guidance and support tailored to your recovery journey. Recovery coaches help you set and achieve personal goals, manage your mental health, and navigate the challenges of recovery.
Peer Mentoring: Peer mentoring pairs you with a mentor who has lived through similar experiences. The mentor offers guidance, support, and advice based on their own experiences, helping you to develop skills and strategies for managing your mental health.
Peer Support Work: Peer support work provides assistance from individuals who have personal experience with mental health challenges. These peer support workers offer empathetic and practical support, drawing on their own experiences to help you manage your condition and improve your well-being.

Benefits of Recovery Coaching, Peer Mentoring, and Peer Support Work

  • Relatability and understanding: All three services provide a level of empathy and understanding that comes from shared experiences. This makes the support more relevant and impactful.
  • Practical guidance: Recovery coaches, peer mentors, and peer support workers offer practical advice and strategies based on their own experiences, which can be highly beneficial in managing your mental health.
  • Enhanced confidence: Engaging with professionals or peers who have successfully navigated similar challenges can boost your confidence and provide motivation.
  • Stronger support network: These services help build a sense of community and connection, reducing feelings of isolation and providing emotional support.

How to Access Recovery Coaching, Peer Mentoring, and Peer Support Work Through NDIS

1. Identify Your Needs: Start by identifying the specific areas where you need support, such as managing mental health, achieving recovery goals, or developing new skills. Understanding your needs will help you determine which service is most suitable.
2. Develop Your Plan: Work with your NDIS planner or support coordinator to include recovery coaching, peer mentoring, or peer support work in your plan. You’ll need to explain how these services align with your goals and needs.
3. Find Providers: Look for registered organisations or individuals offering recovery coaching, peer mentoring, or peer support work. Ensure they provide the type of support you require and are recognised by the NDIS.
4. Use Your Funding: Once these services are included in your plan, you can use your NDIS funding to pay for them. This might involve individual sessions with a recovery coach, peer mentor, or peer support worker.
5. Review and Adjust: Regularly review the effectiveness of the services you receive. If necessary, adjust your plan to ensure it continues to meet your changing needs.

Tips for Maximising the Benefits

  • Communicate Clearly: Share your goals and challenges with your recovery coach, peer mentor, or peer support worker. Clear communication helps them provide the most effective support.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Work with your support providers to establish achievable goals. This ensures that the support you receive is focused and productive.
  • Engage Actively: Take an active role in your sessions and interactions. Your engagement will enhance the benefits you gain from the support provided.

In summary, NDIS funding can be a powerful resource for accessing mental health support, including recovery coaching, peer mentoring, and peer support work. By integrating these services into your plan, you can receive tailored, practical guidance that supports your mental health and overall well-being. Work closely with your NDIS planner, select the right providers, and actively participate in your support to make the most of the resources available to you.
